Overview
Woodleigh MRT Station was once criticise as a “White Elephant” back in 2005, Since the Woodleigh MRT station is completed in 2003, the MRT has been closed to public as there are not many commuters boarding and alighting at the station since there are not much residential and even commercial developments within 400 meters at Woodleigh MRT Station. It thus doesn’t make commercial sense to operate that station back then.
Behind the Woodleigh MRT Station back then is a Malay Cemetery while opposite is a park which is often a jogging ground for residents staying at Potong Pasir and also for Gurkhas jogging training ground.
Transformation of Bidadari
Since 2001, Bidadari’s grave have been emptied and exhumed with the remains being cremated, interred or move to other ground as government make plans to transform the areas with new BTOs and condominiums. Often as cemetery are being cleared for housing, there will be bound to have people complaining about the place as being a cemetery for the dead.
However, this is not the first graveyard being cleared in Singapore. Formerly, Bishan is also a resting ground while it has since been transformed into a all time popular mature estate with HDB flat that even hit a million.
BTO Boom at Bidadari
There has been a flurry of protest on the Bidadari Cemetery redevelopment. Despite that, development work is ongoing. The past few release of BTOs by HDB has seen overwhelming response as there are more applicants as compared to the number of units being release for the sale of the BTO flats.
Other than the history of the site, the attractions of the BTOs flat is because of its city fringe location. A trip to Orchard Shopping Belt, Central Business District or Marina Bay Sands is just about 15 minutes drive away. Nearby also has a few shopping malls like Heartland Mall and NEX Shopping Mall that residents can shop and dine over the weekend. Taking a train to Dhoby Ghaut MRT Interchange take less than 15 minutes too.
Other than within the premises, there are plans to include coffee shops, supermarket, child care and greenery landscaping with Bidadari. There will also be some project that will face Bidadari Park and the new Alkaff Lake.
Retaining the “Park Feel” at Bidadari
In an attempt to retain the park and greenery feel at Bidadari, there will be about 10 hectares in size being reserved for Bidadari park and New Alkaff lake while there will be some mature trees being retained in memory of the greenery feel that this park provides. The former Bidadari Memorial Garden will be part of Bidadari Park in an attempt to preserve the historical value.
In line with Singapore plans to go care lite future with car and bike sharing schemes, there will be cycling and pedestrian routes for residents to travel around and also exercise for a clean and healthy lifestyle.
Transportation at Bidadari
Other than existing Woodleigh MRT Station, there will be an upcoming underground Bus Interchange that will be connected to Woodleigh MRT Station and also Woodleigh Residences. This bus interchange has to serve 2 neighbourbood, both at Bidadari and Potong Pasir.
Within Bidadari, there will be cycling and pedestrian of about 1.6km long and also connectivity to other park connectors.
This location is also well linked up, be it be public transports or road. The estate here is bounded by Upper Serangoon, Sennett Estate and also Bartley and residents are well served by 3 MRT Stations namely Woodleigh MRT Station, Bartley MRT Station and Potong Pasir MRT Station.
