Channel News Asia reported, The Ministry of National Development (MND) has rejected the appeal to amend housing policy of the city-state which is to make it more comprehensive for single parents.
The appeal or petition was tendered in Parliament last September 11 by Louis Ng, MP for Nee Soon GRC on behalf of the seven single parents.
The appellant demand to cover a subsection of the Housing and Development Act, declaring that the minister and the board “should not single out contrary to anyone having a legal protection of a child on grounds of marital status of a person.” On the other hand, unmarried couples and their kids can’t own subsidize flats because they are not considered as a nuclear family by the HBD.
Also, the petition asked for divorce parents an exemption from the policy that impedes them from owning or leasing another HDB units over a period of time after disposing of homes
In rejecting the appeal, the ministry stressed, “The government is dedicated to sheltering the nation and safeguarding children’s well-being. Nonetheless, realizing these goals does need for any special legislative immunity.”
It emphasized that public housing rules are set to help solve the needs of each household in Singapore, the ministry sees to it that it won’t cripple family support and autonomy.
In extending hands to unwed parents, the ministry is also careful not to overthrow the existing social norm of parenting in the realm of marriage.
In helping unmarried parents, the ministry is also mindful of not undermining the prevailing social norm of parenthood within marriage.
” At the same period, it is impossible for our rules to address every case and circumstances. Rather, in cases where it is not covered by laws anymore, we examine them holistically and making adjustments to cater the different household needs per situation. ”
This includes assisting household with a single parent to acquire a flat in their capacity or grant rental housing for those Singaporean having no family backup or support.
