The Housing & Development Board (HDB) and Toronto-based design firm Urban Strategies has won an international award for their plans to transform the Punggol into a sustainable waterfront town.
They were awarded at the Waterfront Centre conference in Washington DC last Nov 8, being one of two recipients, with the Excellence on the Waterfront Honour Award in Plans category.
Dr Cheong Koon Hean, HDB’s chief executive said in a statement, “It is a privilege for us to be distinguished on the global stage having this award. Housing & Development Board (HDB) will keep to apply our knowledge of sustainable urban planning as a guiding principle for more HDB towns.”
In the late 1990s, the development of the north-eastern town has began with the aim of setting it as a “waterfront town of the 21st century”, said the Housing & Development Board (HDB). It will combined a coastal promenade, Punggol Waterway, seven housing districts and green corridors, when completed. The overall urban design strategy is aimed at raising an extreme sense of ownership and community among the residents.
Punggol is on its way to become Singapore’s New-age town occupied with recreational facilities, waterfront living centre and Singapore Property like Waterwoods EC @ Punggol.
